The Minnesota psychologist who went to the Pentagon to counsel first responders reflects on how September 11, 2001 forever altered her life — and surprisingly, for the better.

Marya Hage, then aged 68, was a psychologist living in Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 11, 2001. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross who helped counsel survivors in the aftermath of natural and manmade disasters. Within hours of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, she headed to Red Cross headquarters in St. Paul to see how she could help.
